Exploiting his fame as the killer of Grendel, Beowulf is sent on a diplomatic mission to Saxony, seeking their neutrality in the upcoming war. Confident that his flank is secure, king Hygelac sails south, and in a lightning campaign of bloody warfare the Frisian army is crushed.
Emboldened by success, the Geats march south into the empire of the Francs, carrying fire and sword to the provinces of the Hetware and Cherusci.
But if the enemy appears dormant, looks can deceive, and as the long days of midsummer ebb and the Geats prepare to depart, the Christian giant springs a trap.
In a Viking inspired tale of heathen rites and desperate battles, Hygelac and Beowulf come to understand that Oðin’s thirst for chaos may cost them their lives.
